FE Report
Garment workers started getting violent over implementation of the new pay-scale in Ashulia as workers of several garment factories staged demonstration Wednesday in and around the Dhaka Export Processing Zone.
Police said workers of two factories at Ashulia and two at the EPZ went on strike in the morning demanding increase in wages under the new salary structure.
A senior official of DEPZ said the workers, who have been working at the factory for a long time for Young One Hi-Tech Sportswear Limited, started demonstration as the comparatively new workers are getting more benefit than the old workers as per the new pay scale implemented from November.
The workers began the demonstration Tuesday and did not join work Wednesday morning suspending production at the factory.
Officer-in-Charge of Ashulia Police Station Sirajul Islam said the infuriated workers stopped working again from Wednesday morning following dissatisfaction over the payment.
"We've deployed additional number of law enforcers in the highly sensitive apparel hub to avert any violence that might hamper production," he said, adding that few other factories outside the EPZ were facing such protest over the wage issue.
The OC urged apparel owners to immediately implement the new wage-structure to resume production after gaining the confidence of the workers.
Aghulia police chief Abdur Rashid said workers, however, did not violate discipline, according to a bdnews24.com report.
The police said most of the factories at Ashulia did not increase the workers' wages, though they were supposed to do it according to the new salary structure.
Our correspondent quoting, sources said agitation among workers of several factories has been prevailing in the area over the issue in last few days, keeping the law-enforcement agencies on high alert to maintain law and order in the country's key apparel industrial area.
