CHITTAGONG, Oct 26: Gas distribution authority has assured uninterrupted supply of gas to the readymade garment (RMG) sector facilitating smooth production in the garments.
Managing Director (MD) of Karnafuli Gas Distribution Co (KGDC) engineer Sanwar Hussain Chowdhury said the readymade garment factories will not suffer from holiday staggering (closure of factories by rotation) enforced by the KGDC three days back.He said that the gas crisis was caused due to short supply of gas from the national grid. "We got 222 to 228 mmcft gas until beginning of this week but currently we are getting 205-208 mmcft gas which forced us to resort to the holiday staggering," he said adding that the situation will become normal by the middle of November after receiving gas from Semutang gas field.
He said this at a meeting held with the leaders of the BGMEA this evening. The meeting was addressed by regional BGMEA and BKMEA leaders.
First vice president of the BGMEA Nasiruddin Chowdhury said the factories are facing severe gas crunch due to holiday staggering. He said the major export sector will suffer a lot and many factories may face closure if the gas supply is suspended to the industry.
Ershadullah, AM Mahbub Chowdhury, SM Abu Tayaab, Jamal Uddin, Shawkat Osman and Anwar Sajjad Lepon among others spoke on the occasion.
