Export of garment products recorded 36 per cent growth in the first five months of current fiscal year 2010-11 compared to the corresponding period last fiscal, giving a big boost to the country's overall export earnings.
High demand for Bangladeshi textile products around the globe and the success of exploring and diversifying of new markets resulted in the growth, sector people said.
In July-November period, the country fetched $8.3 billion from overseas shipment registering a growth of 35.80 per cent, according to government data.
The latest data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) show that Bangladesh exported knitwear items worth $3.53 billion, a 36.90 per cent rise, during the period.
Woven items stood at $2.88 billion showing a growth of 35.83 per cent.
Jalal Ahmed, vice-chairman of EPB, said exports from Bangladesh are increasing mainly because of higher shipments to the new destinations and a rebound in exports of some items such as jute, leather, leather goods and frozen shrimp.
"We are also maintaining a good export growth in China and Japan," Ahmed said adding that more buyers are sourcing directly from Bangladesh and already have opened their office here.
