Thursday, 22 July 2010

FE Report
The garment manufacturers Wednesday proposed minimum wages of Tk 2,540 a month narrowing the gap between owners' and workers' proposals.
Earlier, garment owners proposed wages of Tk 2,000 and workers Tk 6,200 a month.
The meeting, however, has been postponed until 1.00 pm today (Thursday).
Shamsunahar Bhuiyan, workers' representative at the Minimum Wages Board told the FE: "We've rejected the proposal of the garment owners."
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasian told parliament Wednesday that the wages which the owners of the RMG units pay to their workers were "insufficient".
Shamsunahr, however, said they will reach a consensus today (Thursday) or next week.
The wage board reached consensus in terms of the grades of workers to five from earlier seven.
This was the eleventh meeting of the board with its chairman Ikteder Ahmed in the chair.
The board fixed minimum wages for the garment workers in June, 2006 at 1662.50 a month.
The government on April 28 formed the Minimum Wages Board to fix pay package for the country's around 3.0 million workers.
