Monday, 31 October 2011

FE Report Garment workers, protesting killing of one of their co-workers in a road accident, ransacked at least 15 vehicles at Shewrapara in the capital Sunday, police said. The deceased was identified as Rabu Begum (25), a worker of Akik Apparel Limited at Taltola. Witnesses said the accident took place at about 7:45am at Shewrapara while she was crossing the road to reach her workplace. She died on the spot. As the death news spread, over 300 workers of the factory became agitated and started damaging vehicles by blockading the busy Rokeya Shoroni that links the capital's north-western part with the central part. A sub-inspector of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station said a Motijheel-bound bus from Mirpur crushed the ill-fated worker from behind, triggering the violence. "At least 15 vehicles were damaged during the turmoil, and traffic movement on the road was seriously disrupted for more than two hours in the morning," he said. The protestors also demanded exemplary punishment against the transport workers for reckless driving. They, however, withdrew the protest following quick intervention of police.
