RMG workers blockade highway, vandalise factories in Gazipur

The RMG workers blockaded Dhaka-Tangail Highway in Gazipur demanding higher rates for per piece of product Saturday. They also vandalized three factories.
The incident took place while the workers of Diganta Apparel Manufacturer at Naojor area in Gazipur went on a strike in the morning demanding higher rates for per piece.
The workers staged a demonstration at 9 am on the factory premises in front of the Dhaka Tangail Highway and vandalised a few vehicles and set fire to a motor-bike.
They started damaging furniture and windowpanes of the factory. At least 15 people were injured by the broken window glasses.
Additional police super of Gazipur Mohammad Mizanur Rahman told the press that workers demonstrated demanding higher rates as per earlier negotiation with the management. They also demanded removal of general manager of Diganta Apparel Manufacturer.
He said that police were deployed at the surrounding area of the factory for maintaining security.
Local MP AKM Mozammel Haque, deputy commissioner Kamal Uddin Talukder and police super ASM Mahfuzul Haque rushed to the spot and arranged a meeting between the factory owners and the workers, sources said.
The workers withdrew their barricade at 2.00 pm on an assurance that their demands would be fulfilled.
