RMG workers condemn vandalism in some apparel units
FE Report | Wednesday, 13 August 2008
Leaders of the National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) condemned Tuesday the incidents of vandalism and arson in some apparel units and demanded proper investigation.
Garment workers allegedly set ablaze Mim Design Sweater factory in Gazipur and ransacked some others in the area.
The leaders of the NGWF, which represents garment workers, were speaking at a press conference in the city a day after the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) blamed vested quarters behind the incidents saying they were out to destroy the country's booming garments sector.
The BGMEA made the comments at a press briefing on Monday as several hundred workers of a factory demanding arrears and wage hike attacked adjoining factories in the Gazipur industrial area on Sunday afternoon, halting production in almost all the factories in the area.
"We are also keen to know why the factories were vandalised and set fire on Mim Design as it is one of those apparel units that pay wages regularly," Amirul Huq Amin, general secretary of the NGWF, said.
He urged garment workers to refrain from resorting to such destructive activities.
NGWF, however, demanded 50 per cent wage hike of the workers as prices of essentials increased sharply.
