RMG workers demonstrate, blockade road in city

Tuesday, 25 August 2009

FE Report
Hundreds of garment workers, demanding due wages and other financial benefits, demonstrated in front of their factory at Rampura in the city and blockaded the DIT Road Monday.
Some 600 workers of Global Woven Wear Limited came out from their workstation at 2/1 Rampura and blockaded the busy DIT Road for an hour at about 5:00pm after the factory authority had failed to give any satisfactory response regarding their demands.
The vehicular movement on the road was disrupted due to the demonstration, which took place in presence of a large number of law-enforcers, causing untold sufferings to the homebound city-dwellers just before the iftar on the second day of Ramadan.
A protesting worker said the authority had earlier fixed Monday as the day to pay their wages, that had been unpaid since July, but failed, leading to the demonstration.
"How can we survive at a time when prices of essential commodities are gradually soaring, if we don't get wages," she questioned.
The factory authority could not be contacted to get their comment over the issue.
Later, the demonstrators withdrew their protest, as the factory management assured them of taking immediate measures to pay their 3-month unpaid wages soon.
