CHITTAGONG, June 1: Workers of a garment factory in the port city staged demonstration Sunday as the authority decided to suspend production having no export orders in hand.
The Ambia Garments declared suspension of production at 11:00 am Sunday.
About 250-300 workers came out of the factory following the decision and chanted slogans against the management demanding resumption of production and paying up their dues.
The workers blockaded the busy Airport Road at Agrabad disrupting traffic for half an hour.
Police later at around 1:00 pm convinced the workers to leave the road and hold their agitation programme on the factory compound.
The workers later withdrew their programme at around 1:30 pm on assurance of negotiations between the management and their representatives in the evening on the day.
Inspector of the Industrial Police intelligence branch Arifur Rahman said Abul Hashem, owner of the garment factory, had suspended production at the factory at 11:00 am Sunday, as there was no export order for its readymade garments.
