RMG workers stage violent protest at Tongi

Tuesday, 9 February 2010

FE Report
Hundreds of garment workers Monday jolted Tongi Industrial Zone once again for arrears and other financial benefit by suspending traffic movement on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway for nearly four hours.
With the latest violence, the industrial hub had witnessed three major workers' protests in the last six months causing concerns to the country's highest export earners.

The workers of Giant and Six Aid Factory, which suspended production since January due to a dispute over its ownership, took to the street at about 9:00am demanding their salaries, bonus and reopening of the factory.
Witnesses said the RMG (readymade garment) workers gathered in front of the Sena Kalyan Commercial Complex in Tongi where the apparel unit was located and staged demonstration barricading the highway that connects Gazipur and Mymensingh districts with the capital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi police station Tapon Chandra Saha said BGMEA vice-president Md Faruque Hasan had transferred the ownership of the factory to one Hasan Sayeed and his brother Nowshad Hasan on December 2007 through a sales agreement.
