RMG workers to get salary, allowances before Eid

New wage structure for RMG workers will be effective from November 1 but they will get salary and other allowances before Eid-ul-Azha as per existing rules and regulations, said Begum Munnu Jahan Sufian, state minister for labour and employment, Thursday.
She, however, requested the garment owners to pay workers' dues before Eid so that they could celebrate the upcoming Eid fairly.
The minister was speaking to reporters after a tripartite meeting with leaders of garment worker and BGMEA leaders at the BGMEA conference room in the evening.
She said the decision was taken after consultation with garment workers' leaders.
Sufian said the workers will get salary in December as per the new wage structure which was effected from November 1.
Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour and Employment Ministry Chairman Israfil Alam MP was present in the meeting as the special guest. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Abdus Salam Murshedy, among others, was present in the meeting.
Mr Israfil Alam requested the reporters to publish favourable reports in newspapers so that no untoward situation happened in any RMG factory before Eid-ul-Azha.
The BGMEA president told the reporters that they were trying to meet the demand of workers ahead of Eid.
The representatives 39 labour organisations out of 48 were present in the meeting.
The government announced the new wage structure for apparel workers in July this year declaring minimum wage at Tk 3000, up from Tk 1662 in the first raise since 2006.
