Ro Ro Ferry ghat resets at Mawa after 45 hrs

Friday, 22 August 2014

The Ro Ro Ferry Ghat of Mawa has been reset after 45 hours. However, ferries are using only Ghat Number 1 to load and unload vehicles. At about 6.45pm on Thursday, the Ro Ro Ferry Ghat was reset temporarily at Ghat Number 2 so that Ro Ro ferries can run because the Ro Ro Ferry can carry more vehicles at a time. BIWTC Assistant General Manager AKM Ashiquzzaman Chowdhury hoped that tailback will reduce soon and situation in the Mawa Ghat will come under control. Ashiquzzaman said that setting the terminal at the Ghat No 2 has been completed. He said it will take 10-15 days to reset Ghat No 3 near the speedboat ghat as the current in Padma River in Lauhajang Upazila of Munshiganj is high and the wind is heavy. BIWTC Manager Sirajul Hoq said, ‘Five ferries halted for gigantic wave in Padma River and the Ro Ro ferries could not run because of the ghat.’ These ferries take 1-and-half-hour to 2-hour to reach Kawrakandi Ghat but for return they take 5-7 hours. Out of 16 ferries, eight ferries are running, he said. BIWTC Marin Officer Md. Shajahan said, ‘Another ramp is to be set near the ghat no.2 so that Ro Ro ferry can run,’ according to BSS.
