Road accident and aftermath
Wednesday, 2 July 2008
GARMENT workers at Savar Export Processing Zone (EPZ) often damage vehicles if there is any accident on the road there. This has become very common there. The same thing happened in and around Dhaka College last Saturday. In an accident, a speeding microbus hit a student while he was crossing the road in front of the college and, in the process, he received grievous injury.
And immediately the students went on rampage. The unruly students set fire to the microbus and then went on a car-wrecking frenzy on the road. The boy who suffered serious injury needed all sorts of medical and financial supports for his recovery and rehabilitation.
But can we support such vandalism by students who are our future leaders? On the day the students damaged hundreds of vehicles taking law in their own hands. Their frenzied reaction left many people injured also. We cannot imagine what kind of education they are getting from their teachers. But we can say such acts on their part crossed the boundaries of politeness.
The road in front of Dhaka College is an area where accident is common. There is definitely an urgency to construct speed breakers or enforcing speed limit on passing vehicles to ensure safety of the students. Better traffic management here needs extra importance as the roads in front of educational institutions usually are considered sensitive spots.
But again we must say that the students should show their respect, to others. Accidents must not be allowed to go on. But after accidents the students should not damage property of the innocent people. They should allow the law enforcers to act properly.
