Road crashes during Eid holidays kill 30

At least 30 people were killed in several road accidents across the country during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays from early Monday to early Thursday, report agencies.
Of them, 16 people were killed in seven separate accidents in five districts -- Dhaka, Rangpur, Panchagarh, Kushtia and Jhalakathi - during the last 24 hours from early Wednesday to early Thursday.
Of the total 16, four people were killed in three separate accidents in Dhaka.
Among them, two people died as a car rammed into an autorickshaw at Uttara.
The victims were identified as driver Md Tayeb Ali, 65, and passenger Md Taifur Khondker Ratul, 40. The accident occurred on Thursday morning in Uttara Sector-13.
ASI Abdul Khan of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital said the two were brought to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors at the emergency division declared Tayeb dead on arrival. Ratul succumbed to his injuries around 9 am.
The autorickshaw had arrived at the Singer intersection in Uttara Sector-13 when it was struck by the car, Abdul Khan said, citing Tayeb Ali's son.
Tayeb Ali, a native of Jamalpur's Melandaha, lived in Jatrabari's Dholaipar area.
The car involved in the accident has been seized, said ASI Abdul Khan.
Two other road accident victims were also brought to DMCH for treatment late on Wednesday and were declared dead.
College student Md Shihab, 21, was riding his motorcycle on the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover in Jatrabari when he got into an accident.
After completing his HSC from Government Tularam College, Shihab was preparing to start university. The eldest of two brothers and sister, Shihab lived in Narayanganj's Khanpur area.
Another victim, Abu Siddique, was killed in Darussalam area of Mirpur. He was a native of Bandarban and worked as a cook at a local madrasa.
Siddique was severely injured after being hit by a motorcycle in front of Darussalam Tower at night, according to his son's friend Rashed Zaman. He was initially rushed to Suhrawardy Hospital before being transferred to DMCH.
ASI Khan said Shihab's body has been handed over to his family without an autopsy. Siddique's body is in the hospital's morgue.
Five people were killed when a microbus crashed into a three-wheel vehicle carrying them on the busy Dhaka-Rangpur Highway in the district on Wednesday night, police said.
The deceased were identified as Amzad Hossain, 50, and Sirajul Islam, 37, from Taraganj upazila; Ambia Begum, 60, Jahangir Alam, 45, and Nazma Begum, 35, from Gangachhara upazila of the district.
The accident occurred around 7pm near Sanetala Bazar in Sadar upazila of Rangpur district.
"The Taraganj-bound microbus hit the three-wheel vehicle coming from the opposite direction, leaving three of its occupants dead on the spot and two others injured," said Mahbub Morshed, officer-in-charge of Taraganj highway police.
The two others succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital, he added.
Three teenage boys were killed as their motorcycle crashed into a roadside tree on Talma-Modelhat road in Sadar upazila of Panchagarh on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The deceased were identified as Natun Islam, 16, Mahabubar Rahman Shishir, 17, and Abu Bakkar Siddique, 16, of the upazila, said police.
They said the trio was going to visit Bhitargarh Maharaja Dighi on a motorbike. The motorcycle crashed into a roadside tree as the rider lost control following a collision with another motorcycle at Pukuridanga Balurghat village in the afternoon, leaving the the three injured severely.
Locals rushed them to Panchagarh Sadar Hospital where doctor declared them dead, confirmed Md Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge (OC) of Panchagarh Sadar police station.
Two brothers were killed and five others injured in a collision between a three-wheeler and a pick-up van on the Kushtia-Rajbari road in Shimulia union of Kushtia on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Madrasa student Samirul, 10, and Firoz Mondol, 45, sons of Rezaul Islam of the district.
Witnesses said the accident occurred when the pick-up van crashed on the three-wheeler coming from the opposite direction on Kushtia-Rajbari road in Shimulia around 2pm, leaving the siblings dead on spot and five other passengers of the three-wheeler injured.
The injured were rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where they are undergoing treatment.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Khoksa Police Station Syed Ashiqur Rahman said the killer vehicle was seized. However, the driver of the pick-up van fled the scene soon after the accident.
Two youths were killed and another was injured when their bike collided with a motorised three-wheeler on the busy Barisal-Patuakhali highway in Jhalakathi district early Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Nirob, 25, son of Shahjahan Mridha, and Limon, 20, son of Nasir Howldar. Both were residents of ward 29 area in Barishal city.
The accident occurred around 12pm near the Kather Ghor area of Nalchity upazila on the Barisal-Patuakhali highway.
According to witnesses, Nirob with his two friends -- Limon and Sumon -- were travelling towards Barishal on a motorcycle when it collided with the three-wheeler. Nirob dead on the spot in the impact.
Limon died of his injuries at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital while Sumon is battling for his life at the medical facility, said Abul Kalam, ward master of the hospital.
Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Nalchity police station, said the injured was taken to hospital by locals. "We are looking into the matter," he said.
