Sunday, 20 September 2009

Three deadly road accidents in Pabna, Comilla and Chapainawabganj districts Saturday claimed the lives of at least 14 people and left scores injured, as highways countrywide saw mounting holiday traffic ahead of Eid, reports bdnews 24.com.
Six people were killed and over a dozen were hurt as a bus and a 'Koriman' vehicle collided head-on at Sujanagar in Pabna, while a collision on the Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi highway claimed another five lives. Three people were killed and at least eight injured when a wheat-laden truck veered into a ditch at Choddogram Miahbazar in Comilla.
Meanwhile, at least 10 passengers were hurt as a bus caught fire after a collision in Manikganj.
Pabna Sadar assistant superintendent of police Mohammad Nizamuddin told the news agency that three passengers were killed on the spot and 18 injured when a bus, heading for Kajirhat from the district town, and a shallow-engine-driven Koriman, coming from the opposite direction, crashed head-on.
Another three critically injured passengers died on the way to hospital, said the police official.
Only one of the dead could be immediately identified. He was Abdus Salam (40) of Khanpura village, said Nizamuddin.
In Chapainawabganj the road accident claimed five lives and injured at least 40 when a crowded bus collided with a three-wheel passenger vehicle at Haripur on the Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi highway.
All who died were passengers of the tempo. Four were killed on the spot and one died at hospital, Chapainawabganj Sadar police chief Ahsanul Haq said.
In the accident in Comilla, three people were killed on the spot and at least eight others injured when a wheat-laden truck veered into a ditch at Choddogram Miahbazar.
