Road digging causing public suffering

Tuesday, 22 August 2023

Indiscriminate road digging in Old Dhaka has continued to cause public suffering in Wari, Doyaganj, Mirhajirbag and their adjacent areas. The residents of these areas have been experiencing untold sufferings over the last couple of months for road cutting. The road digging is continuing unabated for months for installation of utility pipelines under the roads and not a single road is being spared. The work is going on at a snail's pace compounding the woes of the residents. The main roads are being dug once more multiplying the sufferings of people and leaving the whole area dusty. All roads in the area are in a shabby state and vehicles plying on these roads are vulnerable to road accidents.
Extensive road digging has also added to the sufferings of commuters by creating frequent traffic gridlocks. Some roads have been excavated months back but they are now left abandoned causing untold sufferings to the residents when it rains. The prevailing condition is leading to huge traffic congestions, accidents as well as business losses. There is no coordination in road digging between the utility service agencies and the city corporation authorities. If one road is blocked for digging, an alternative road should be opened for traffic movement. But this is not happening in the older part of Dhaka city. Public sufferings have increased due to lack of coordination, delay in implementation and no monitoring by the city corporation authorities as well. If the city authorities took stern action against the contractors and did proper monitoring, public sufferings could have been reduced.
