Road in Sunamganj haor in bad shape

OUR CORRESPONDENT | Tuesday, 12 November 2024

SYLHET, Nov 11: An important road in the vast haor region of Dharmapasha upazila and its neighbouring areas of Sunamganj has remained in a sorry state for a long time, causing immense sufferings for commuters.
Local people have alleged that the four-km road has been dilapidated due to the negligence of the authorities concerned.
The road starts from Bahutiakanda Temukhi point on Dharmapasha-Joysri road to Kandapara, which plays a good role in the local communication as the haor region lacks roads, especially during the monsoon.
Hundreds of people have to use the run-down road every day. As there has been no repairs on the road in the last few years and the devastating floods of 2022 badly damaged it.
The road has been unfit for movement of any minor vehicles while pedestrians, especially schoolchildren and elderly people, suffer much after another prolonged flood last year.
Many parts of the road have developed potholes. It becomes ramshackle during rainy season.
The LGED has constructed RCC road from near Shaitankhali Bridge's eastern side to Bahutiakanda point.
But, the road has not been repaired in recent years, locals allege.
Moreover, the people have to use the road for reaching Mohdipur ghat to catch launches, trawlers or even speedboats towards Sunamganj district town.
Locals said that accidents often take place on the road. Often they have to clear water from ditches.
A number of children have to use the ramshackle road to reach schools, but they suffer to walk or ride bicycles.
However, an official at the upazila LGED says a project has been approved recently under the emergency maintenance programme.
"Hopefully, the repair work on the road will start soon," he added.
