The Power Division Tuesday organised a road show in the capital to entice potential investors for installation of a 450 megawatt (MW) gas-fired independent power plant (IPP) at Bibiyana in northern Sylhet.
Two more similar road shows will also be held abroad - one today (Wednesday) in Dubai and another, day after tomorrow (August 17) in Singapore - to woo investors for the power project.
Senior executives from local and international companies, banks and government officials, numbering over 75, took part on Tuesday's road show held at Hotel Radisson in the city.
The Bibiyana IPP will be located adjacent to the US oil giant Chevron-operated Bibiyana gas field near Sylhet.
The government intends to appoint a qualified investor to assist in the development of the project.
The winning investor will enter into a 22-year implementation agreement with the government to build, operate and own the project.
The selection to the qualified investor or consortium will be carried out through a competitive bidding process.
"The Bibiyana IPP project is an excellent opportunity for private sector companies to provide high quality competitive priced power to help meet the growing energy needs of Bangladeshi households and industries," Power Division Secretary Fouzul Kabir Khan told the newsmen at a press conference after Tuesday's road show.
The Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) is committed to ensuring a transparent competitive bidding process and plans to issue the pre-qualification documents by end of August, he said.
"We have provided gas supply guarantee for implementation of the 450MW Bibiyana IPP," Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) Secretary AMM Nasir Uddin said.
