CHITTAGONG, October 20: Most roads of Chittagong city are busy thoroughfares on which thousands of vehicles move regularly. However, lack of maintenance and proper and timely repairs keep most of the roads in a deplorable condition. Even two months after the rainy season, no positive step has so far been taken by the concerned authority to rebuild the dilapidated roads, which, despite being still used, are certainly quite unfit for the movement of vehicles of all categories.
Roads in Bahaddarhat, Chawkbazar, Kapashgola, Muradpur and Sholashahar are full of cracks and holes. Repair work of Nawab Sirajuddowla Road-from Chawkbazar to Andarkilla-which began in 2006 has still not been completed and only the authority concerned can shed light as to when it would be finished.
Besides causing extreme discomfort to the passengers, these bad roads also take a heavy toll on the vehicles. Also, road accidents are frequent on these roads.
The conscious quarter feels that the government should take a decision so that immediate steps are taken to improve, repair and maintain the roads of the city and alleviate the sufferings of the commuters. Many also feel that this should be carried out under the supervision of the joint forces.
