A 'shootout' between the police and a ‘robbers’ gang’ early on Sunday has left a youth dead in South Keraniganj. Local police’s Officer in Charge Monirul Islam claimed the shootout took place at Par Gendaria’s Shatpakhi area around 1:45am. The law enforcers also detained two other members of the ‘robber-gang’. The deceased Md Yusuf, 35, hailed from Bigha Village in Dhaka’s Dohar area. The two detained are 29-year-old ‘Ismail’ from Matowali village in Shariatpur and 30-year ‘Sohrab’, who hails from Awliabad village in Madaripur. “All three of them are members of a gang of robbers. They are accused in a number of cases for charges including murder and robbery. Raids are on to arrest other members of the gang.” The official went on to claim they raided the spot based on a tip-off that 9-10 robbers were preparing for a heist. “The robbers opened fire after they found police approaching. The policemen also retaliated and Yusuf was hit. Ismali and Sohrab were caught as they were fleeing.” Doctors declared Yusuf dead when he was taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital around 3am, the OC added. A pistol, two rounds of ammunition and a number of local weapons were seized from those arrested. Islam said five policemen were also injured in the shootout and were released from the hospital after first aid, according to bdnews24.com.
