Robi's profit jumps 200pc, on data revenue growth

The country's second largest telecom operator, Robi Axiata reported a whopping 200 per cent year-on-year profit growth for Jan-Sept this year.
Its consolidated net profit was Tk 1.72 billion for the nine months, driven by a revenue growth of 17.35 per cent to Tk 74.31 billion, compared to the same period a year ago.
Of the total revenue income, Tk 73.93 billion came from contracts with customers, while the remaining Tk 377.41 million from leasing out infrastructures, such as cellular towers.
The greater portion of revenue from contracts with customers came from mobile services.
Mobile services helped earn Tk 68.90 billion in revenue in January-September this year. Mobile services include voice, non-voice traffic, data, subscriptions and connection fees.
Revenue from Internet services saw a 12 per cent year-on-year growth to Tk 3.97 billion in January-September, compared to the previous year.
"Data revenue mainly led to the robust growth in revenue earnings," said company secretary Mohammed Shahedul Alam.
He added that Robi had started reaping benefits from investments.
Its data consumption had been on the rise, and efficient management too played a vital role behind the profit growth, he said.
In the three quarters to September, Robi saw a 17 per cent growth in the number of subscribers to 570 million.
The company's cost of revenue rose to Tk 46.49 billion for January-September, 2023 from Tk 40.02 billion for the same period of the previous year.
During the reporting period, the company's consolidated earnings per share (EPS) stood at Tk 0.33, down from Tk 0.11 of the previous year.
The company also saw a robust year-on-year profit growth in July-September. The consolidated EPS was Tk 0.20 for July-September 2023, increased from Tk 0.06 for the same period of the previous year.
Robi's non-operating income jumped 69 per cent year-on-year to Tk 204.47 million in the nine months through September.
