RAJSHAHI, July 02: The railway landport at Rohan-pur under Chapainawabganj district carries an immense possibility for import and export of goods through freight trains.
Rohanpur railway port has an easy access to some Indian rail stations.
Goods from those rail stations can be imported and goods from Bangladesh can also be exported direct from Rohanpur.
But due to lack of proper repair of some 60 kilometres of Rajshahi-Rohanpur-Amnura-Chapainawabganj railway track, the functions of Rohanur railway port could not be made fully operational.
The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Nov-ember 11, 2003 appro-ved a project worth Taka 250 million for renovation of Rajshahi-Rohanpur route and two other rail routes of the west zone of Bangladesh Railway (BR).
The Caretaker Govern-ment has also approved the project but the work of renovation of the rail track is yet to be started.
The lines in the region remain in a dilapidated condition and slippers have not been renovated since their installation. Railway officials said the wooden slippers are useable for 12 years only but the slippers were installed in the track about 70 years back.
In recent times, accidents on the route have increased because of unrepaired and dilapidated rail lines.
At least 30 derailments had taken place in the last one year. If the renovation works are completed, pressure on the highways would also be reduced and goods from India could be imported at cheap rates.
The chief engineer of west zone of BR said if the project is implemented, only the Rajshahi-Rohanpur route can earn more than Taka 10 million a year.
