\\\'Rohingyas may try to enroll in voter lists in Dhaka\\\'

Sunday, 7 September 2014

After its vigilance in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar districts, the Election Commission has warned its voter registration workers that Myanmar’s Rohingya refugees may attempt to become registered voters in Dhaka city. The updating of voters’ lists in Dhaka and Chittagong cities as well as in 120 Upazilas began this (Monday) morning. This will continue till mid-November. Driven out of Myanmar due to communal violence, tens of thousands of Rohingyas took shelter in Bangladesh 24 years ago. Since then many have become voters here. This came to public notice after some Rohingyas carrying Bangladeshi passports were arrested abroad for various crimes. At a recent meeting of the central committee on voter rolls updating, the Chittagong divisional commissioner said Rohingyas were moving to other parts of Bangladesh to become voters since the EC was alert in the country’s southern area. The records of the meeting said Rohingyas were trying to become voters with the aid of fraudsters and they will try this in Dhaka as well. Election Commissioner Abdul Mobarak said in his report on Sunday that Rohingyas had registered as voters in Patia Upazila, Chittagong, according to a news agency.
