Rokeya's ideals a guide to women empowerment: Speakers

RANGPUR, Dec 9 (BSS): Speakers at Pairaband village here Thursday termed the ideals, social conscience and thoughts of Begum Rokeya as useful for all the time in establishing an advanced society by ensuring equal rights of the womenfolk.
They said Rokeya was a great social philosopher, human rights activist and pioneer of women renaissance in the sub-continent and her ideals still show the right paths and directions to the present society, generations and politicians.
The present society badly needs proper implementation of the ideals of Rokeya to ensure education, equal rights and empowerment of the women in building a really happy, prosperous and developed digital Bangladesh, they said.
They were addressing the first discussion meeting of the 3-day official observance programmes of Rokeya Day-2010 to mark the 130th birth and 78th death anniversaries of Begum Rokeya at her birthplace Pairaband.
Rangpur district administration has chalked out elaborate programmes under the auspices of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in observance of the Day at Pairaband.
Earlier in the morning, Divisional Commissioner Jashim Uddin Ahmed formally inaugurated the observance by placing floral wreaths at Begum Rokeya Smriti Stambha.
Special prayers were offered at a milad mahfil seeking divine blessings for the departed soul of the pioneer of women's freedom, blood donation was organised, and a 3-day Rokeya Fair was inaugurated at Pairaband.
Deputy Commissioner BM Enamul Haque chaired the discussion titled 'Begum Rokeya's Literary Works: Perspective and Artistic Values' and Divisional Commissioner attended it as the chief guest.
Convener of Rangpur Awami League Abul Mansur Ahmed and Mithapukur Upazila chairman Zakir Hossain addressed as the special guests. People from all walks in the society joined the inaugural day functions and a large number of stalls and shops have been set up in the Rokeya Fair displaying numerous traditional products of local cottage industries.
The speakers recalled the outstanding contributions of Begum Rokeya in the field of women education, establishing women's rights and empowerment in the then conservative society during the British rule.
They said Begum Rokeya was the first woman in this region to realize that without ensuring education and rights of the womenfolk, a society cannot achieve its desired sustainable developments, democracy and civilized status.
Later, artistes of Joy Bangla Sangskritik Jote, Sammilito Sangskritik Jote, Chandosik Sahittya and Sangskritik Gosthi, Rokeya Shakhawat Sangskritik Gosthi and Paglapeer Shishu Sangeet Bidyalaya presented the inaugural day cultural functions.
