Role of varsities vital for progress of community development: Nahid

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Wednesday said the universities could play a significant role in the advancement of community development by carrying out intensive research on various issues.
The minister was inaugurating a regional policy dialogue titled "Building Bridge between Universities and Communities". British Council, Bangladesh, and University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh jointly organised the programme in a city hotel.
Mr Nahid emphasized on building bridge between universities and communities and urged those institutions to conduct more researchers on various significant issues including agriculture, water resources, engineering, health, and environment so that society-people can derive more advantage.
"Higher educational institution can contribute more to expedite country's economic growth but they need to be closer to the common people," said UGC Chairman Prof AK Azad Chowdhury while presiding over the inaugural session.
