Tuesday, 30 June 2015

A Dhaka court on Tuesday again placed Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of Awami League MP Pinu Khan, on a 2-day remand in a case filed for reportedly shooting two people to death with his firearm at New Eskaton in the city. With this, Rony has been placed on a total of 10 days’ remand, following four days each time twice. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Aminul Haque passed the order after Rony was produced before the court. The court also rejected the bail petition filed by Rony’s lawyer Kazi Najibullah Hiru. Earlier, the court fixed Tuesday for hearing the petition for a seven-day remand, submitted by investigation officer of the case sub-inspector of Detective Branch (DB) Dipak Kumar Das on June 28. On April 15, Rony, said to be a drug addict, allegedly opened fire on people indiscriminately near Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton area from his car, leaving two people -- rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and Janakantha’s auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Ali -- injured with bullets. Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 15 while Yeakub died at the hospital on April 23. On April 15, a case was filed with Ramna Police Station against unidentified people in this connection. On June 1, law enforces arrested Rony from his Dhanmondi residence in connection with the firing, according to a news agency.
