RU hall students protest meal charge hike

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Dec 4: The residential students of Rajshahi University (RU) protested the hike in meal charge at the halls of the university.
Hall sources said that provost council, an organisation of all hall provosts, in a meeting on Nov 29 increased the meal charge of dining from Tk 16 to Tk 20 at noon and from Tk 13 to Tk 16 at night. This extended meal charges will be given effect from next Tuesday.
Earlier about hundreds residential students of Shahid Ziaur Rahman Hall staged demonstration protesting the increase at the hall premises on Friday.
The residential students of hall alleged that halls authority increased the meal charge without any discussion with the students.
A month ago the university administration raised the wages of dining employees by 400, so there is no reason now to increase the meal charge that comes as an burden for the residential students, they also alleged.
Dr. Mizanur Rahman Khan, a hall provost of Sayed Amir Ali hall said, "We have taken the decision of increasing meal charge considering price hike in essentials including rice and edible oil.
