RAJSHAHI, Aug 22 (UNB): Students of Rajshahi University (RU) blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in the city Saturday protesting the Friday night's assault on some fellow students by auto-rickshaw drivers.
Campus sources said a group of students of Mathematics Department of the university staged demonstration on the highway in front of the main gate of the university around 12:00pm, disrupting vehicular movement on the highway for half an hour.
The traffic movement returned to normal around 12:30 pm after Proctor of the university Tariqul Hasan rushed to the spot and assured the students of taking necessary actions to settle the matter.
Three students-Yeakub, Chanchal and Liton-of Mathematic Departments hired an auto-rickshaw to go to their mess in Binobdpur from Rajshahi railway station around 11:30pm on Friday.
An altercation ensued between the three students and the auto-rickshaw driver when the auto-rickshaw driver refused to go to Binodpur after reaching Talaimari area of the city.
At one stage, the auto-rickshaw driver along with other local three-wheeler drivers beat up the students, leaving them injured.  They were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
