Friday, 11 September 2015

Students of Rajshahi University (RU) blocked Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of the RU in Motihar on Friday to press home their 6-point-demand. The demands include providing compensation for their fellow Mehedi Hasan Emon who was killed in a road accident in Sirajganj district. The other demands include giving exemplary punishment to miscreants involved in the accident following proper investigation, turning all important highways into four-lane ones, banning plying of unfit vehicles on the highways and enforcing speed limit on the highways. Witnesses said a group of 300 students formed a human chain blocking the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of the main gate of the RU around 11am. They staged demonstrations there for half an hour, disrupting vehicular movement on the highway. The students withdrew the blockade around 11:30am after RU Proctor Prof Tariqul Hasan assured them of meeting their demands. Mehedi Hasan Emon, son of Abdus Samad of Nazimkhan union under Rajarhat upazila in Kurigram district and a 2nd year student of RU Biochemistry Department, suffered injuries in a collision between a bus and truck on Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway at Khalkula in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj on Tuesday. Emon was rushed to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 2:30pm on Wednesday. The mishap also left four people dead on the spot and over 49 injured, according to a news agency.
