RU teacher knifed to death

Rajshahi University (RU) teacher AKM Shafiul Islam was murdered near the campus on Saturday. Witnesses say a group of youths assaulted the sociology teacher with sharp weapons in front of Bihashpalli when he was returning home around 3:00pm. He sustained critical injuries on his head and shoulder. Islam later started for a hospital on a rickshaw but fell down when it approached Binodpur near the campus. Bystanders rushed him to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH). ‘He died as soon as he was taken to the operation theatre around 4:00pm,’ RMCH doctors said. The motive behind the attack is not clear yet. Motihar Police Station's OC Alamgir Hossain said they were trying to identify and arrest the assailants. Meanwhile, agitated RU students blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway protesting the murder. The RU Teachers' Association has also announced to boycott classes and examinations on Sunday, according to a news agency.
