RUET academic activities resume amidst tight security

Monday, 27 April 2009

RAJSHAHI, April 26 (BSS): Academic activities of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) resumed today amid tight security after a 43-day unscheduled closure.
Most of the students have returned to the campus restoring a normal academic atmosphere after a gap of a long time.
Meanwhile, adequate security measures have been taken at the educational institutions with the deployment of police and Ansar on the campus to maintain law and order.
However, all sorts of political activities like processions, meetings, rallies, writing and pasting of posters and leaflets on the wall and hanging of banners have been suspended on the campus for an indefinite period to maintain academic atmosphere.
All the students have been asked to carry their identity (ID) cards round the clock. No residential students were allowed to enter or exit their halls from 11pm to 5:00am since last night.
RUET and seven other educational institutions, including Rajshahi University (RU) and Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) were closed for an indefinite period following the March 13 violence on Rajshahi University (RU) campus. Clashes between two rival students' organisations at the RU left a Shibir leader dead and scores others injured earlier in the month.
The violence spread to other educational institutions prompting the authorities to close their doors sine die.
The RMC will reopen Tuesday after a 45-day unscheduled closure and its students’ dormitories will reopen tomorrow (Monday).
On the other hand, RU authorities may decide to reopen the university at the end of the current month after observing the overall situation in RUET and RMC after reopening those institutions.
At a meeting with RU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan at his office Saturday, the heads of all departments suggested reopening of the university on June 1 and residential halls on May 24.
