Rupsha-Bagerhat railway

Friday, 6 January 2012

The newly-appointed minister in charge of Railway expressed his desire to reintroduce railway services again in the routes closed earlier along with the introduction of new routes.
Similar utterances were made by his predecessor in the communications ministry. The Rupsha-Bagerhat railway route, which was commissioned in 1918, was totally closed down during the early 1990s.
Of the 730 world heritage sites declared by UNESCO, three are in Bangladesh. One of them is the Khan Jahan Ali mosque in Bagerhat, another is the Sundarbans mangrove forest also along the Bagerhat-Khulna-Satkhira coast while the third is the Buddha Bihar of Paharpur.
Thus, Bagerhat is an important place and the tourism potential of the area is enormous. We hope that the newly-appointed railway minister will take immediate steps to reintroduce the railway service in the Bagerhat-Khulna route.
