Rural courts raise hope among distressed people of Magura

MAGURA, Jan 3: Rural court has raised hope among the distressed people of Magura as people are getting justice within very short time from the court. Moreover a plaintiff requires no lawyer to run his case in this court.
Rural people also prefer rural court as it saves them from the pressure of going to district town. The court gives judgment regarding assault, theft, misappropriating money and property, damaging crops and livestocks and cheating and some other crimes.
The UP chairman is the chairman of rural court. He conducts the trial with the help of 5 members of the court.
Nannu Biswas a farmer from village Nakol under Sreepur Upazila of Magura said, Ikram Biswas of the same village attacked him with a stick over cutting crops of his land. He sustained serious injury and complained at the rural court at Nakol. The court fined Ikram Tk 2 thousand. Ikram paid him tk 2 thousand according to the direction of the court. He said he was satisfied with the judgment as he could not go to judicial magistrate court to get judgment for want of money.
Gonochandra Shaha of Batiadaha village under Mohammadpur upazila of Magura informed one Badsha of the same village cut jute from his land by force. He complained at rural court of Babukhali. The court directed Badsha to return his jute. Moreover the court fined him Tk 1300. Following the direction of court Badsha returned my jute including Tk 1300. He got judgment within a month. But it was not possible at the judicial magistrate court or district Judge court.
Rural court is being run by LGRD Ministry under the project of Activating Village court in Bangladesh. A total of 14 rural courts in Magura district are working with the help of WAVE Foundation.
When contacted Shusanta Kumer Shaha, Deputy Commissioner of Magura said, rural court is gaining popularity among the distressed people of 14 union of Sreepur and Mohammadpur upazila of Magura.
