Rural women become driving force for socio-economic advancement

RANGPUR, Apr 30 (BSS): Thousands of rural women have the driving force in achieving self- reliance to accelerate socio-economic advancement and empowering them sustainably by contributing a lot towards attaining sustainable rural uplift.
Earlier, these successful women had to live under miseries due to abject poverty even a decade ago and their children are now going to the schools though they never thought about education of their kids in the pasts.
At the same time, they have achieved sanitation coverage, raised their voice against repression, child marriage, dowry, polygamy, superstitions and adopted proper family planning to reduce population growth rate.
Because of their appreciable awareness, maternal and neonatal deaths, malnutrition of the children, women and pregnant women have been reduced everywhere, including remote and hardly reachable char areas.
Talking to BSS, the successful women said it became possible only after attaining economic self-reliance through their hard endevours at their own or with assistance of various ongoing programmes of the government, NGOs and donor agencies.
They said the rural women have already driven away the decades-old curse of extreme poverty, commonly known as 'monga', from the northern region as the downtrodden womenfolk have now become economically solvent through income generations.
Many of them have achieved success through homestead gardening and setting up of smaller cottage industries, participatory social forestation, microcredit activities and income generations under the government's social safety net programmes.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer of Rangpur Abdus Salam the rural womenfolk have achieved laudable success in eradicating poverty to accelerate social advancement, sustainable development and women empowerment.
Head of Programme Coordination of RDRS Bangladesh Monjusree Saha said the rural women have been playing vital role in attaining socioeconomic uplift, developing and empowering the womenfolk with equal rights in the society.
Executive Director of Northbengal Institute of Development Studies Dr Syed Samsuzzaman said the rural women have achieved the laudable success following the decisive political will and effective steps of the government for social advancement.
