Monday, 23 March 2009

Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Gennady P Trotsenko Sunday submitted a formal proposal to State Minister for Science and ICT Yeafesh Osman for setting up a nuclear power plant (NPP) to meet Bangladesh's growing demand for energy, report UNB and BSS.
Talking to reporters after the meeting with the state minister, the ambassador said Russia is endeavouring to assist Bangladesh to construct the plant to meet her energy needs.
He said a Russian team of experts would soon come in the city to discuss this issue with the concerned authorities.
The state minister told reporters that they would study the proposal and hold further discussions on it with the Russian expert team.
"The Ruppur power plant is very important to resolve the country's power problem. When the plant goes into operation, it will generate 1,000-megawatt electricity daily," he said.
Science and ICT Secretary M Nazmul Huda Khan and Acting Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Mohammad Liakat Ali were also present at the meeting.
Earlier, reports said Russia has proposed backing for a 1,000-MW NPP at Rooppur.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told Parliament on March 18 that her government would set up a NPP to meet the growing demand for power.
"We are taking initiative to set up a nuclear power plant at Rooppur site," she said responding to question from a member during the Prime Minister's question-answer time in the parliament.
China and South Korea also offered assistance to Bangladesh for setting up the NPP. China is willing to support Bangladesh to set up a NPP on the China-Pakistan model.
