Police said the firearms and ammunition recovered from Dhaka's Sabujbagh was brought in to kill a Jubo League (JL) central committee leader, reports bdnews24.com.
The accused procured the arms and ammunition from the Hili border area earlier Thursday.
Police, for the sake of investigation, did not reveal names of the targeted leader and those planning to murder him.
Police Detective Branch (DB) Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said, "The detectives detained a man after being certain that he was planning to kill the leader by taking advantage of the Jubo League's internal feud. A group of Motijheel miscreants was planning this."
Detective Police Deputy Commissioner, East, (DC) Jahangir Hossain Matubbar said one Saifullah Khan, 40, was nabbed from a house in East Basabo around 3:30am Wednesday.
Later, two revolvers, a pistol and 1,000 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the office of Basabo Mobile Servicing Engineers' Association of Bangladesh near the house.
Detective sleuths said during the initial interrogation Saifullah had told them that he collected the weapons from Dinajpur's Hili border area in order to kill a Jubo League leader.
He had been given five firearms, two of which he had given to an associate, they said. Detective Police Joint Commissioner Monirul said the 'modern' weapons were smuggled in from Brazil, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
