Safe water, sanitation project launched in Brahmanbaria

BRAHMANBARIA, Feb 24: The Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction Programme (UPPR), UN Habitat and Coca-Cola led multi stakeholder partnership project arranged the launching ceremony at Lutfunnesa Government Primary school in Comilla Wednesday to improve access to drinking water and sanitation facilities. Vice president of South-West Asia for Coca-cola Miguel Angel Ruz, International Programme Manager for UPPR Richard Geier and Head for Health Unit of Concern Universal Z I Mamun were present at the function. Speaking at the function, Mr. Miguel Angel Ruz, Vice President, South West Asia for Cola-Cola said, "Access to safe drinking water is fundamental to all communities and we understand that businesses thrive only amidst vibrant and sustainable societies". The Coca- Cola Company and the United Nations system enjoy a long-standing partnership that includes advocacy and implementation of projects in a wide range of areas, including in support of the Millennium Development Goals. Over the years, The Coca-Cola company has made available its expertise and experience in support of UN causes. According to Mr. Richard Geier, International Programme Manager of UPPR, "Community Development Committees (CDCs) in Dhaka and Comilla had pre-selected 120 candidate schools and an on-site baseline survey helped to narrow the list to 35. For a school to be eligible for the project at least 50 percent of its students had to come from poor or extreme poor families and its management had to establish an adequate operation and maintenance fund." Z I Mamun, Head - Health Unit, Concern Universal, stated that, "At the start, Concern Universal surveyed the selected schools to document the existing water and sanitation situation and hygiene practices. They found that 70 percent of the schools had a water supply that neither functional nor could be repaired." The Urban Partnership for Poverty Reduction Programme is a government of Bangladesh executed, UKAID funded, UNDP-managed and UNHABITAT assisted initiative. UN-Habitat is the United Nations agency for human settlements, which is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities where the goal of promoting socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. The partnership announced the completion of its first project to the local community in Comilla. This project was launched in June 2010 with a two year timeline and aims to : - Improve water, sanitation and hygiene practices in 35 schools. - Enhance the capacity and skills of teachers and school authorities to maintain these facilities. - Demonstrate viable public-private partnerships that serve as a model for improving conditions in urban slums.
