Saga of looting

Wednesday, 2 July 2014

This relates to a recent newspaper report on 'robbery and corruption' as depicted in the audit report of the "Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Development Program" covering July, 2012 to June 2013.
Some of the adjectives used by the auditors in describing the irresponsible state of affairs were: "collusive tendering", "fictitious documentation", "fraudulent practices", "misappropriation and misuse of money" and "useless purchases"; till they probably ran out of adjectives. That is the summary of the 'teamwork in fleecing' that was carried out undetected throughout the year till the audit caught up with this 'daylight robbery'.
The amount involved comes to US$220 million from international donors, and US$101 million from GOB. This is the classical case of, "Government ka mal; daria mey dhal" (Pour public money down the river). This long saga of 'making hay while the sun shines' came out in the audit report for the period July 2012 to June2013. It makes us believe that such malpractices are going on in all public sectors. These unholy syndicates have been depriving the common people from development and health services.
The least the authorities should do is to recover the money with interest from the 'thieves', put them behind bars and publish their photographs and all particulars in all the dailies so that others can be wary of this band of thugs.
