Sagar-Runi murder case may be cracked by Oct 10: Home Minister

Wednesday, 26 September 2012

Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir Tuesday hoped that the mystery surrounding the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi will be unravelled by October 10, reports bdnews24.com.
The newcomer minister said at his Secretariat office, "Probe has made enough progress. I hope it will be possible to reveal Sagar-Runi murder mystery by Oct 10," Alamgir said.
According to him, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), which was tasked with probing the murder after two months' failure of the Detective Branch (DB) of police to identify the killers, is investigating the killings with 'highest attention'. His comments came after a meeting with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Dan W Mozena.
Sarowar was the News Editor of a private television channel, Massranga, while his wife Runi was a Senior Reporter of another television channel, ATN Bangla.
Regarding his meeting with Mozena, Alamgir said the diplomat was concerned over the protests outside the US embassy.
Alamgir blamed Hizb ut-Tawhid, an Islamist organisation, for the protests, where the protesters turned up after shaving off their beard.
"Action will be taken against them," Alamgir asserted.
BSS adds: The elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Tuesday interrogated private TV channel ATN group Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman at its Uttara headquarters in connection with the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Mehrun Runi.
"The RAB investigators, now entrusted with the charge of investigating the case interrogated him for nearly three hours," RAB's media wing chief Commander M Sohail told the news agency.
Sohail, however, declined to elaborate about the interrogation but said "definitely, such investigation was expected to enrich us."
Two factions of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and several other journalists' forums suspected that the media owner might have a hand in the mysterious murder and demanded his arrest.
But the Tuesday's development came hours after Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir told newsmen that he expected the mystery behind the couple murder to be unearthed by October 10.
RAB officials earlier said they unearthed crucial clues to track down the assailants as partial report of DNA tests of the relevant evidence reached them from the United States.
