Home Minister Sahara Khatun has dismissed the rumour about government move to arrest BNP leader Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury MP as has been reported by both electronic and print media, reports UNB.
Responding to reporters' queries at the Home Ministry Wednesday, she said police did no go to Salahuddin Qader's house in Chittagong Tuesday night to arrest him.
IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, who was present, also echoed the Home
Minister, saying that the news has no basis.
On Tuesday night there was strong rumour that plainclothes police took position in front of Salahuddin Qader's Goods Hill house to arrest him. Salahuddin Qader himself admitted to different media about the presence of plainclothes police outside his house.
Our correspondent adds: BNP workers and leaders flocked around the residence of Salauddin Quader Tuesday late night on rumours that the police arrived there to arrest him.
Over one hundred workers assembled and chanted slogans against the government for about an hour from 11.00 pm.
Local BNP leaders Shahadat Hossain and Dastagir Chowdhury and Jamat-e-Islami leader Shahjahan Chowdhury were on the hilltop lawn with SQ Chowdhury at that time.
The police however left the scene with the number of protesters increasing, they said.
Assistant commissioner (north) of CMP Amena Begum told the media that rumours of arrest passed on from vested circles to create confusions among the common people. "The CMP did not send any police to arrest him," she said.
