Sahara warns police on undercover militant activities
Thursday, 2 April 2009
Reminding police of the clandestine militancy grooming in a Bhola madrasah, Home Minister Adv Sahara Khatun Wednesday directed the force to flush out if there be such undercover militant activities in other parts of the country, reports UNB.
"Such militant activities must remain on steam in other areas of the country," the Home Minister told senior police officers at Rajarbagh police lines auditorium in the city Wednesday.
Sahara gave the address to the police top brass (Police Super onwards) as part of programmes of the Police Week-2009 observed for a second consecutive day Wednesday.
The Home Minister reminded them of the matter of operating militancy under cover of a Madrasah-cum-orphanage at a remote village under Borhanuddin Upazila in the coastal district of Bhola in recent times.
The members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered arms and ammunition and arrested four militants in this connection from the Madrasah following intelligence report.
Adv Sahara directed the police officers to keep monitoring and intelligence surveillance round the clock as the present government is 'committed to rooting out terrorism, extortion and militancy' from the country.
"Besides, you have to conduct operation against muggers, extortionists, 'ogyan' (doping) and 'malam' (balm) parties, showing zero tolerance," she said arming the cops with strict orders.
Terming police role as important in establishing the rule of law in any country, the Home Minister said professionalism on part of police could ensure peace and discipline in the society.
The Home Ministry custodian said every member of the police force has to work with professionalism. Besides, the police has to turn into service-oriented institution to sensitise human rights and democratic values.
She said Bangladesh police has to act as a complementary force to contribute to country's economic development alongside protecting constitutional rights of the people.
