Saidpur railway workshop starts repairing broken passenger coaches

NILPHAMARI, Feb 12: Saidpur railway workshop has undertaken a massive scheme to repair dilapidated and broken passenger coaches. The repairing of such 18 passenger coaches are now in progress in the workshop. Engineers and workers are engaged in repairing the same.
Workshop sources said the 18 railway coaches remained abandoned in Chittagong Pahartoli workshop. Those coaches has now been shifted from there to Saidpur railway workshop for repairing.
Sources said all those 18 passenger coaches are of meter gauge tracks which were used in Subarna express intercity train and were abandoned as unusable.
Railway sources said cost of import of a new passenger coach is Tk 50 million but the repairing cost of a single broken coach is around Tk 8 million only. Total repairing cost of all 18 coaches would stand at Tk 144 million or so.
Established in 1870 on 110 hectares of land Saidpur Railway workshop has 26 heavy repairing shops where once there were 8,000 workers and employees which has now reduced to 1568 persons only.
Sources said there are now 2553 vacant posts of workers in the workshop and due to shortage of manpower proper works in the workshop is being hampered.
