CHITTAGONG, Aug 30: The staying period of vessels in the port has been reduced to only 30 to 39 hours from 11 to 15 days earlier with the handing over the operational activities of the Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) of Chittagong Port (CP) to a private operator and strict monitoring of the joint forces.

This not only benefited the CP itself but the port users had also been benefited remarkably, concerned sources said. Sources further said, number of the vessels used to be operated at CCT earlier had now been doubled. It lessened congestion of vessels at the outer anchorage and the vessels now could arrive at the CCT directly and timely from the outer anchorage. With the introduction of cut-off time by the private operator Saif Powertech strictly, an invigorating atmosphere had been ensured at CP.

Port users sources claimed that Saif Powertec was unparalleled in handling containers at CP and a radical change had been brought about in container handling activities of CP since Saif Powertec was assigned with the task. Meanwhile, CP had attained the status of an international port.

In a recent meeting of the Council of Advisors held at Chittagong Circuit House Chief Advisor Dr Fakhruddin Ahmad highly lauded the tremendous progress achieved at CP through participation of the private operation under the proper supervision of the joint forces. In this connection, he assured the local journalists to provide all cooperation so that the CP could sustain its existing capacity.

In this connection ,Saif Powertec Ltd, Managing Director T.M. Ruhul Amin while talking to the FE said, with the use of only 29 per cent operation of the gantry crane, turn around time of the vessels had declined to 30 to 39 hours. If use of 70 percent operation of gantry crane could be ensured then turn around time of vessels would be reduced to 24 hours and all the port users would be benefited remarkably, he added.
