Saif PowerTech starts operation

CHITTAGONG, Dec 19: The Saif PowerTech started operation Tuesday under a new contract in Chittagong port.
Under the new contract signed with the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), it is now handling each 20 equivalent unit (TEU) container at the Chittagong Container Terminal at the rate of Tk 155, which was Tk 505 per unit till Monday.
The Saif PowerTech officials said the commencement of unloading containers from the Liberian flag vessel MV Hansa Stealsund took place at 3.00pm Tuesday. The vessel with 301 TEUs container berthed at the CCT in the morning.
The CPA and the Saif PowerTech entered into an agreement to handle 0.9 million (9 lakh) TEUs container in three years at the CCT at Tk 139.5 million (13.95 lakh) in three years from Tuesday. Till the morning of the day the berth operator handled each TEU container at the rate of Tk 505.
Saif PowerTech got the business as the lowest bidder among seven bidders where the second lowest quoted price was much higher.
Some berth operators that participated in the tender also alleged that no genuine bidder could quote such a low price andsought further invitation of tenders from the experienced bidders but the tender evaluation committee (TEC) of the CPA found the Saif PowerTech bid a genuine one.
