Saifur-Hafiz body has no link with BNP: Khaleda

Tuesday, 6 November 2007

Detained BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has sent a message through her lawyer Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, saying that Khandaker Delwar Hossain is the party's secretary general, reports UNB.
BNP Acting Office Secretary Rizvi Ahmed on behalf of Shimul Biswas conveyed Khaleda's views to the reporters at his Adabar apartment in Shyamoli Monday.
Adv Shimul Biswas met Khaleda Zia at the makeshift jail in the Sangsad Bhaban complex Sunday and had nearly two-hour discussion with her.
Rizvi said that as Shimul Biswas was now in difficulty, he communicated Khaleda's message to him.
He said the BNP chairperson had stated that Saifur-Hafiz committee has no connection with BNP.
In her message, Khaleda said conspiracy was on against the nationalist force and asked all leaders and workers of BNP to remain united.
Meanwhile, Khaleda's adviser Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah said: "With the restoration of free politics, they (dissidents) will be given such a political lesson that leaders of other political parties will take lesson and correct their positions."
Meamwhile, BNP standing committee member Dr RA Gani termed Monday illegal the October 29 standing committee meeting that appointed Saifur Rhman as acting Chairman and Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed as acting Secretary General of the party.
"I was invited by Saifur Rahman at his house to have a cup of tea.
Since he is a senior leader, I went to his house. It was not a formal meeting of the standing committee and it was not convened according to BNP constitution," he told reporters at his Dhanmondi house.
Gani said, "We had also agreed that decisions of the meeting will have no effect" since the BNP Chairperson has the exclusive right to call a meeting of the party's standing committee.
In reply to a question, he said they put signatures on a party letterhead for their attendance but did not sign any paper containing the decisions of the meeting.
"Since the standing committee meeting was not held in accordance with the BNP constitution, decisions of the meeting have no legitimacy," Gani said.
