CHITTAGONG, Sept 30: On the eve of the Eid ul-Fitr, lachchha semai (vermicelli) of substandard quality has flooded the local markets of the port city. The food item manufactured in an unhygienic manner is now being sold in an unabated manner, sources said.
It is alleged that lachchha semai is fried with the tallow (animal fats) of different animals. Tallow, which are imported from abroad for manufacturing soap, are said to contain poisonous chlorine.
While visiting different markets including Reazuddin Bazar, Bahaddar Haat, Karnaphuli Complex and Chawkbazar, it was observed that lachchha semai was stored in large uncovered cases thus mixing with dust and sands.
As the price of the palatable item is cheaper, it is being sold abundantly. Lachchha semai manufactured by different companies are now being sold at Tk 70 to Tk 100 per kg.
Experts said animal fats are used for preparing lachchha semai that contains the flavour of pure ghee.
BSTI sources said nobody is allowed to sell lachchha semai in the open market. It is strictly prohibited and injurious to human health and punitive measure would be taken against its sellers and manufacturers. Such action is yet to be taken.
