Sales in cattle markets yet to gain momentum

With two days left for Eid-ul-Azha celebration, sales in the city's cattle markets are yet to gain momentum.
But sellers said that cow sales will pick up from Wednesday evening.
"We expect to get good number of customers Wednesday evening hours," Md Khokan, a cattle merchant in Golpabagh told the FE.
Experienced cattle traders said that brisk sales of cattle and other sacrificial animals will peak from today (Thursday) evening as the offices will formally go for three-day vacation on the day.
The prices of sacrificial animals remained a little bit on the higher side compared to last year. Traders said supply from the country side is good.
"Our market has around 3000 cattle heads. But this is because of poor sales," Md Moslem Uddin, an official of Kamalpur makeshift cattle market.
Shajahan Mian of Meherpur, a cow trader at Golapbagh Balur Maath told the FE: "Customers thronged only during afternoon. But there was no significant sales."
Md Elias, a cattle trader at the city's Nayabazar said that customers were only asking prices adding: "I brought eight cows and have sold only one Wednesday."
Akeruzaman Dewan, another trader of Golapbagh Balur Maath near Sayadabad told the FE: "If supply side improves, then the prices of cattle head will fall."
On Wednesday a large sized bull was being hiked between Tk 80,000 and Tk 90,000.
But a buyer had bought three large sized cows at a cost of Tk 185000.
Small sized cows are being sold between Tk 20,000 and Tk 30,000.
Md Khokon, a trader of Golpabagh Cattle market said there are few Indian cows in the market adding : "Most of the cows were brought from Chuadanga, Alamdanga, Kushtia, Faridpur and Jamalpur districts."
