The sales and shopping of various fashionable ornaments are now gaining momentum in the capital, as thousands of people throng shopping malls, arcades and markets to purchase their ornaments just a few days before Eid.
"Young men and women are now very busy buying their ornaments, as they have almost completed buying their dresses and shoes for the Eid," ornament traders told the FE.
The customers were purchasing dresses and shoes until Ramadan 22, but now they are busy buying their makeover items according to the design and colour of their dresses, they added.
"Women are now mostly fond of bangles, ear-ring and garland made of silver, stone, oxidised metal, wood and thread," an ornament seller of New Market told the FE. "Young girls also have a fascination for 'payel'," he added.
They are frequently using gold-plated ornaments, as the price of gold is very high, and silver is much cheaper than gold. The 'bhori' of gold is Tk 27,999 (21-carat), where the 'bhori' of gold-plated ornaments is Tk 580, another seller of Gawsia market said.
The customers can also buy ornaments made of wood, thread, metal, kori, silver, kundon, clay and rudraksh at prices between Tk 20 - Tk 1,000.
Men are also actively participating in the race of fashion, as they are now wearing different ornaments like ear-ring (bali), chain with locket, garland and bracelet etc.
Besides, branded watches such as Citizen, Rolex, Rado, Omega and Titan are ranged between Tk 1,000 - Tk 15,000. The prices of non-brand sunglasses are between Tk 150 - Tk 350, and branded ones such as Gucci, Calvin Klein and Hugo etc between Tk 2,000 - Tk 5,000.
The market operators hoped further increase in the sales of ornaments, as the Eid-ul-Fitr and Durga Puja will coincide this year.
Many like to purchase these fashionable items from New Market and Gawsia, as prices are a bit cheaper there. Besides, other shopping malls and markets in the city's Gulshan, Dhanmondi, Naya Paltan, Elephant Road, Panthopath, Mirpur Road, Mirpur and Gulistan areas are also attracting the busy Eid crowds.
