Salman F Rahman, Anisul Huq arrested

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 14 August 2024

Salman Fazlur Rahman, private industry and investment affairs adviser to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and former Law Minister Anisul Huq have been arrested by law-enforcement officials.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Mainul Hassan confirmed the update to the FE, adding that they were arrested on Tuesday in a case filed with the New Market Police Station.
He further said two office bearers of Hasina's government were detained from the Sadarghat area in the city while fleeing.
According to police sources, two people were killed in a clash in front of Dhaka College on July 16 during a programme of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Two murder cases were filed with the New Market police station in this incident. These two have been accused of instigating these murders.
Cabinet members of Sheikh Hasina's government went into hiding after she resigned as Prime Minister on August 5 this year in the face of a mass uprising. Leaders of the ruling Awami League also followed the same path. Many of them have left the country.
Anisul Huq has been an Awami League MP since 2014 from Brahmanbaria-4 (Kasba) constituency. He then took an oath as the Law Minister and was performing the same job before going into hiding.
Salman is the former President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and one of the founders of Beximco Group.
Salman became an MP in 2018 from Dhaka-1 constituency after being nominated by the Awami League. He was then appointed as the private industry and investment affairs adviser to the former Prime Minister.
