Salt production likely to face serious setback

CHITTAGONG, Dec 13: As the salt farmers were deprived of just price of their product during the last season they are not interested enough to start salt cultivation in the current season. Despite passing of some time since the beginning of the production season, the salt farmers have not started cultivation of salt even on half of the targeted land, concerned sources said.
Moreover, with rise in price of polythene, white salt cultivation is apprehended to decline. The country had surplus production of salt during the last two years.
According to concerned sources, for the current season, the target of salt production has been fixed at 1.3 million tonnes and 70 thousand acres of land have been brought under salt cultivation programme in Cox's Bazar district. However, salt is also produced in some areas of Banskhali Upazila of Chittagong district.
As the salt farmers did not get legitimate price of their produced salt during the last season they lost interest in salt cultivation.
Unrefined salt is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per maund while refined salt is sold at Tk 40-Tk 52 per maund.
Moreover, a huge quantity of salt has been lying with the salt farmers and hoarders. It justified price of the produced salt is not ensured, its production is likely to face a serious setback, sources apprehended.
